BEND, OR – The Deschutes Trails Coalition announced awards totaling nearly $30,000 for their annual Small Projects Grant program. This program funds trail-related projects within the Deschutes National Forest.  Congratulations to this year’s recipients: South Deschutes County Chapter of COTA, Friends of Central Cascades Wilderness, Discover Your Forest, and the Deschutes National Forest. The five projects selected for funding include projects focused on improving winter trail accessibility for persons with disabilities at Wanoga, Swampy and Meissner Sno-Parks; replacing failing interpretive signage on the popular Ray Akinson Trail at Sparks Lake; defining suitable water access points and restoring eroded user-created trails along Tumalo Creek in the vicinity of Tumalo Falls; funding a multi-day trail training event designed to train new and returning volunteers in trail maintenance and stewardship; and funding the construction of a trailhead kiosk to inform users of the new Sunriver trails about responsible use, conservation, and sustainability. Project work will occur between August 2021 and September 30, 2022.
